Day 4
Daytrip to the dead volcano and lake Terkhiin Tsagaan Nuur, in this lake you can do some swimming and fishing. Sometimes the weather is a liitle cold for swimming in the morning. When you take a dive later that day, the lake will be warmed by the sun. At the lake you will actually find Mongolia's only small sandy beach. It is an excellent place for fishing, but you might have to buy a licence first. There are a few park guards who issue these licences, but normally they are hard to find. Overnight stay in the Khorgo yurt camp.
Day 5
A ride to Kharkhorin. We will make a few stops underway, among one at Taikhar Chuluu, a very special formed, large rock. The rock is the subject of many legends of which the best known one is the legend of the Great Baatar, the hero. He is said to have killed a large snake by throwing the rock on it. The locals say the rock has many holy Tibetan writings, but these are hard to find. On the top of the rock you will also find an Ovoo. An Ovoo is a piramid-shaped collection of rocks, wood and other offer gifts like bright blue silk ribbon. The Ovoos are usually situated on the top of a hill or mountain. It is an old Shamanistic tradition to sacrifice for the gods. The tradition: walk around the Ovoo three times (clockwise) and bring a small offer (usually a stone) and make a wish. Ovoos are holy to the Mongolians, any digging and hunting near an Ovoo is prohibited. The Mongolians also believe that people who do not show respect for the Ovoo will become sick or even may die. Later-on we will visit the small city of Tsetserleg, the centre of of the Arkhangai province. Tsetserleg, which means "garden", is a beautiful place. The city is surrounded by mountains and along the streets are many trees. Overnight stay in the Kharkhorin yurt camp.
Day 6
Visit to the ruins of the old city of Kharkhorum, which was founded by the next of kin of world famous conquerer Genghis Kahn. Only the impressive city walls are still intact. Hardly any proof of the existence of the old city itself is remaining today. The former city is situated between the vivid trade routes and is surrounded by a wall with four gates. Each gate had its own market with its own specialty. Grain in the east, goats in the west, oxes and cars in the south and horses in the north. Outside the wall were many yurts, it once should have been a great sight. Within the walls you will find a small museum and the fantastic monastery of Erdene Zuu (one hundred treasures). The monastery was the first Buddhistic monastery in Mongolia. During the Stalinistic period, the temple was heavily damaged and all religious rituals were forbidden. The sanctuary has been restored where possible, but remains not half as beautiful as it used to be. Some elderly monks of the Order of the Yellow Caps still teach young monks between 8-20 years of age here. It is a true experience to attend the lessons. Subsequently we will drive to Gobi Saikhan Ovoo. You will spend a night at ger camp next to the village.

You will make a walk over the icecap (in the middle of the desert!) and you will visit a camel breeding. In the Gobi desert you will come across many camels. In some villages, breedings can be found. A camel can easily do without water for a whole week and can carry up until 250 kilos of burden. Moreover, a camel produces around 5 kilos of whool and some 600 litres of milk each year. Overnight stay in one of the yurt camps of Dalanzadgad.
Day 10
Wednesday. Departure to Mandalgobi, the centre of the province of Dundgobi. Dundgobi is a very varying area. Green in the north and extremely dry in the south. The surrounding area contains hundreds of graves of Mongolian warriors. Little is known about these graves, but they probably date back from the Genghis Kahn times. The graves can be recognised by an unnatural gathering of large rocks on a small bump. Some 50 years ago, Mandalgobi consisted of only 40 yurts, nowadays it is a medium sized city with many facilities. It has an airport, multiple hotels, a monastery, a museum and some shops. The museum which is situated there is divided into two parts, a nature historical part and an etnographic part. Overnight stay in a simple hotel in Mandalgobi.
